Whether you are buying a house or starting a new relationship, there are compromises to be made.
Start a Relationship Like You Would Buy a Home
A realtor once told me that when you are shopping for a home, you can have two of the following three: location, price and size.
Or put another way, for every Vancouver-area home and condo you look at, you will have to give up one thing to make it work.
This means that for every home you look at, you are giving up one thing. If you are looking for less expensive and more space, you may not be living in Yaletown or any where in the downtown Vancouver core area.
Many people debate this issue before signing on the dotted line. Do you favour a smaller commute versus a backyard? Where do you see yourself in five years? Still in the city? Is this the right one for you? Are you overlooking deal breakers because the view is amazing?
Perhaps it is my profession as a matchmaker, but I can see the co-relation between buying a home and dating in Vancouver.
As a matchmaker, I love when someone falls in love and all the pieces click together. But it rarely happens like that.
Often times, there are sacrifices to be made. Do you move in together so that you are closer to her work or his? Do you give up your lovely flat on Commercial Drive for his two storey in Burnaby?
Before signing on the dotted line of exclusivity, it is important to do a bit of soul searching. Is this what you want? Are you ignoring key deal breakers in the name of love? Where do you see yourself in five years?
The key is knowing what it is you are willing to compromise on and what is a deal breaker.
There are plenty of homes and singles on the market.
